Send The Bread Over The Water

In the Western culture the majority of us recognizes the Golden Rule in one form or another.

We might not be able to pinpoint the exact words or the exact place in the Bible.

But we are familiar with the idea of doing to others what we want them to do for us.

I think most of us consider ourselves as good people.

We try to do good and be nice and fair to the people around us.

But many of us have changed this rule into:

Do good to others if they do it first to you.

Or do to others as they do to you first.

We even have a popular word for it, the Karma Law, it will come back to bite you in the end.

But the Bible talks about sending the bread over the water.

Of doing good before others have the chance to do good to me.

Turn the other cheek, even when it doesn't seem humanely possible.

We are not to do this with our own power.

But by leaving ourselves, and our wills, into His hands.

  1. I think god means so many different things to different people. It's definitely something to think about.

  3. I love to read what it means to everyone. I think he gives each of us a meaning for what he wants it to say it to you during the time you read it. I've read things several times and each time something may become a different meaning to me. I do agree though, one should treat others good and help when you can. Love the memes you have here. Thank you for the reminder.

  4. I do believe some people are taking the stance you speak of, but more and more, society does surprise me...like the long line of Pay It Forward customers in the drive thru at a Dunkin Donuts (I think it was)...I believe more than 300 people participated. That surprised me.

  5. I understand what you mean. Most times bad news travels faster then good news...and it does seem like the majority of society is going into a self righteous stand. There are many people doing great things (like the pay it forward) ignitiative. I love it! We are part of a Paid4You program where it's basically the same concept. The old testament really focused on the eye for an eye...but I'm ever so grateful for the mercy and God's love recorded in the new testament. Stay strong Joanna, and be that beacon of light of love <3

  6. A beautiful food for the soul.... we attract what we give out to the world. if we all remember that everyday in every way, then maybe it will be a better place for all of us

  8. I like the idea of doing good unto others with no expectations of getting anything in return. That's the ideal.

  10. What a lovely idea! I had never heard of this before but will try to do more of this in the future. I do believe in karma but it's also nice to do things for others without expecting repayment.

  13. Thank you for sharing. My husband and I just talked to our little man about the Golden Rule of Life, the "Do unto others what you want others do unto you" the other day. We talked to him about living these rules in life and learn how to respect others. We are hopeful he will grow up to be a kind and responsible man.
